What's in this FREE mini-course?
Five thoughtfully selected exercises, designed to build your confidence and help you carve out some sketching 'me-time'.

Know Your Materials

We start with your pencil itself, no pressure, no plan, just marks on the page. A playful, low-stakes way to loosen your hand and get comfortable with how your pencil moves and feels, freeing you from any fear of getting it wrong before we go any further.

Boosting Creative Thinking

Through the simple Thirty Shapes exercise we'll look at speed and pattern recognition. This rapid-fire module trains your brain to break complex objects down into simple geometric boundaries.

Tapping Into Imagination

Here our focus will be playfulness and abstract thinking. You will start with random, messy lines on the paper and use your imagination to transform those accidental marks into recognizable doodles or characters.

Let Go of Perfection

It's time for some blind contour drawing. By keeping your eyes completely closed or looking only at your object - never at your paper - you'll learn to trust your hand-eye coordination and embrace quirky, imperfect lines.

Exploring the Everyday

For the final lesson, we will take a highly familiar object from your kitchen such as a mug or a teacup and use your new skills to capture its form in a quick 5-minute study. It's all about still life appreciation.

This is Just the Beginning

A warm closing to the course that celebrates how far you've come and points you gently toward what comes next in your sketching journey. Because this really is just the beginning.

"Thank you for the mini course, helped overcome my fear of using a pen for sketching. Will definitely practice everyday for the rest of the month. "

Fran, Doodler

"Thank you Susan for the 5 day course. As someone who is not at all comfortable with art, your lessons have been a huge help. Thank you."

Nikki, Sketcher

Hi, I'm Susan.

I'm a sketchbook mentor, author, and educator who has spent over fifteen years teaching people to find their creative practice and keep it.

My approach is warm, unhurried, and non-prescriptive: there's no right way to do this, and there's nothing you can get wrong.

I know how hard it can be to find time for yourself, and that even a small pocket of it, five minutes with a sketchbook, can be enough to feel like you again.

Why join me?

Finding five minutes for yourself can feel surprisingly hard, even when you know how much you need it.

This course is a gentle way in. There's no pressure to create anything impressive, nothing to get right, and no experience required, just a few quiet minutes with your sketchbook each day.

We move through simple mark-making, playful exercises, and a little observational sketching, all designed to quiet the inner critic and help you enjoy the process rather than judge the result.

Every lesson is a short video you can follow at your own pace, whenever those five minutes appear in your day.

By the end of the five days, you won't just have a fuller sketchbook. You'll have a small, sustainable habit of making time for yourself.

Me-Time?

This mini-course includes 5 days of sketching video tutorials with Susan.

Each simple tutorial explains a creative exercise to carry out on paper or in a sketchbook with a simple pencil (or pen).

After the five days, you will continue to have access to the full course for as long as you need it - so you can return to it again and again whenever you want a creativity-booster or a reminder of what the exercises are.

"Thank you so much for this course Susan. It was great to be making lines on paper again, after so long. And to be reminded that there's a picture in everything!"

Kath, 2025

What you'll need

Don't worry about having everything before you start. The exact materials for each tutorial are listed underneath the individual lesson, and I'll always suggest alternatives where I can. I never want the wrong materials to be a barrier to sketching.

For the course as a whole, it's helpful to have:

  • Sketchbooks in a couple of different sizes
  • A pencil
  • A sharpener and eraser
  • Fine liner pens or a fountain pen
  • Throughout the course, everyday objects will also be used as subjects - these are listed under each individual lesson.
